Lunchtime at St Vincent's - Dvorak Wind Serenade

Dvorak's 1878 D-minor Serenade can be seen as the pinnacle of the tradition of Harmonie Musik or wind band music that flourished in the palaces of the Hapsburg Empire from about the 1750s onwards. It was common for small groups of woodwind players to be employed to provide serenades, often in the open air, for banquets and garden parties. Dvorak's work shows the influences of earlier classical composers such as Haydn and Mozart, also evident in other music in the programme.
